So what does SmartLine actually charge me?

Nothing for the $5 itself — that money is yours, sitting as credits. The only thing SmartLine charges is the $199/mo Pro subscription that auto-starts on day 4 (skip it by cancelling inside the 3-day window). Usage like voice minutes and SMS is then deducted from your credit balance at cost plus a small margin.

When am I billed the $199/month?

On day 4, right after the 3-day window ends. The subscription is month to month from there. You can cancel inside the 3-day window and you are never billed the $199. Is there a longer free trial?

Why does sending SMS need extra registration?

US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) require A2P 10DLC business registration before any platform — ours included — can send SMS to US numbers. You pay this directly through Twilio: about $4 one-time brand registration ($40 if you're a Sole Proprietor), $15 one-time campaign vetting, and $10/month per active campaign. What about WhatsApp Business?

WhatsApp requires Meta to verify your business — free, but typically takes 1–3 weeks. You'll need a phone number that isn't currently on consumer WhatsApp and a real business presence Meta can match against (a website, Google Business profile, or LinkedIn). Once verified, conversations are billed per session by Meta through Twilio (roughly $0.01–$0.09 per US conversation depending on category). We help you submit the verification and pick a number that qualifies.
